17th March 2020: Hippocrates Conference in Oviedo postponed
Further to our notice below about postponement of the 15th May Conference in Oviedo on Poetry and Medicine, in addition, from Tuesday 17 March until the end of the State of Emergency, measures by the Spanish Government now include the closure of land borders for those entering Spain, with the following exceptions: Spanish nationals, Spain residents, frontier workers and those able to prove that they need to enter for essential reasons.
We aim to defer our annual one day conference on poetry and medicine to mid-May 2021, to be combined with awards of the 2021 Hippocrates Prize.
13th March 2020: Hippocrates Conference in Oviedo cancelled
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has now advised against travel to Spain.
The Rector of the University of Oviedo has formally closed every campus at the University of Oviedo. The Hippocrates awards conference planned for 15th May 2020 has therefore been cancelled.
Please save the date for a possible 2020 Hippocrates awards related event to be held in London on the evening of 4th November 2020, subject to evolution of the Covid-19 virus pandemic.
12th March 2020: Urgent notice re Oviedo Conference
We have now heard from our Oviedo, Spain partner in this year's Hippocrates Awards Conference – due to be held on 15th May 2020 – that the Oviedo University's Humanities Department will be closed from this weekend. An announcement is expected to be made soon that Oviedo University will be closed entirely, as other universities in Spain have already been.
In view of these developments, it now seems certain that we shall have to announce the postponement of the Oviedo conference. We shall confirm this formally when we have more details from Oviedo.
This does not affect the Hippocrates awards themselves or timing of their announcement.

The 11th annual international conference on poetry and medicine is being held as a partnership between the Hippocrates Initiative for Poetry and Medicine and the University of Oviedo.
The conference will be eligible for 6 hours of credits for Continuing Medical Education.

The 2020 international symposium on poetry and medicine will include lectures, round table discussions and poetry readings.
There will be talks, discussion panel and poster sessions on literary perspectives, historical and contemporary themes, illness and poetry, poetry as therapy, poetry in the education of health professionals, and poetry as an aid to health professionals.
